England, Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts: Als der Maler Hallward sein Portrait malt, wünscht sich der junge Dorian Gray, das Bild würde statt seiner altern und die Spuren seiner Ausschweifungen tragen. Zu letzteren lässt er sich durch den zynischen Lord Wotton nur zu gerne verleiten, und schon bald ist man in London über seinen lasterhaften Lebenswandel entsetzt, während man sich wundert, dass er nicht zu altern scheint. Als Hallward Gray eines Tages besucht, macht er beim Blick auf sein Gemälde eine furchtbare Entdeckung.
