Mathree Bok nimmt an einem Schüleraustausch nach Kalifornien teil. Sie wuchs in Südafrika der Apartheid auf und ist sichtlich geschockt, als sie ihre Gasteltern trifft, denn die sind schwarz! Piper, die Gasttochter hatte mit einem schwarzen Mädchen aus Südafrika gerechnet und ist ebenso erstaunt über die weiße Mathree. Die beiden Mädchen gewöhnen sich allerdings mit der Zeit aneinander und überdenken ihre Vorurteile.
