Zwei Dinge liebt Selma über alles: amerikanische Musicals und ihren kleinen Sohn. Die Musik erleichtert ihr die harte Arbeit in der Fabrik und bringt Leben in ihre Welt, aus der langsam das Licht schwindet. Denn Selma hat ein trauriges Geheimnis: Sie wird blind. Um ihren Sohn vor dem gleichen Schicksal zu bewahren, spart sie sich für dessen Operation das Geld vom Munde ab. Doch dann stiehlt ein verschuldeter Nachbar in seiner Verzweiflung Selmas Vermögen und löst damit eine Kette unglücklicher Ereignisse aus, die Selma schließlich in eine aussichtslose Situation treiben …
